Chocolate and Cheese treat

Posted on: 28th September 2016

The third Monday in September is a public holiday across much of Switzerland, so on Monday 19th September the Surval girls and Boarding team found themselves off and out for the day, exploring the gourmet side of our local area; including a visit to the Cailler Chocolate Factory, the Gruyere cheese factory and lunch at the beautiful village of Gruyeres.

Our journey took us though the Alpine countryside (and clouds) to a sunny unassuming village nestling amongst the mountains, but actually home no less to the gigantic Cailler Chocolate Factory. The moment we stepped off the bus our noses were filled with the rich, tempting smell of chocolate. After our tour and almost too many tasty samples, we descended upon the factory's shop to fill our bags full of chocolate before continuing our journey.

Our next stop was Gruyere and a tour of its Cheese Factory, which included learning how this world famous cheese is made and tasting and comparing its various maturities – the 6 month old was the overall winner!

Then onto Gruyere itself, a truly endearing and picturesque village - our visit had to start with a group photo session! The girls and staff enjoyed exploring all the delights on offer, including it various artisan shops and boutique restaurants and cafes;  indeed, we didn’t leave any corner of Gruyere un-photographed by the Surval girls: a delightful finish to a super day out.
