Surval students visit Istanbul!

Posted on: 3rd March 2014 | Category: Trips and excursions

During the February half term break, twenty-two girls and four members of staff travelled to Turkey to explore the city of Istanbul. We were incredibly lucky with the weather and were able to enjoy many of the sights Istanbul has to offer under a blue sky in the warmth of the sunshine.

The girls had an excellent time discovering Turkish culture, cuisine and customs and were able to discover many of the tourist attractions including the Hagia Sofia, the Blue Mosque, with its exceptional tiling, the Basilica Cisterns, the legendary Topkapi Palace, the Galata tower, Pierre Loti, Taksim Square and both the Grand Bazaar (which they loved) and the Spice Bazaar. Watching the sun go down over the city from a rooftop restaurant was an unforgettable experience. A cruise along the Bosphorous strait gave us a spectacular view of both the European and Asian sides of the city from the water. One unusual fun time was a morning spent in the Turkish baths: a new experience for everyone! The trip was made especially valuable thanks to the excellent guide who accompanied the girls for the week: as one student wrote

"It’s amazing how much you know about Istanbul and all the culture it has. This has been one of my favourite tours because of your knowledge, time and charisma. Thanks for being so patient, I feel like I really know Istanbul, and there’s so much more to know about." Gaberiela (Guatemala)

Not only did the girls learn a lot about the history and culture of Istanbul, they also returned relaxed and ready to start the next half of term, with a suitcase full of souvenirs from the Grand Bazaar.
