Verbier Ski Weekend!

Posted on: 26th April 2017

During the winter term at Surval, our wonderful Alpine location allows us to benefit from weekly sports sessions in the snow. Every Thursday from January to April, our students take part in skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing.

As well as these weekly opportunities, we also offer the girls the possibility of gaining further tuition and practising in smaller groups at the weekends. So, where better to take advantage of all that Surval's location has to offer than nearby at one of the world’s most famous ski resorts?

On Saturday 18th March, Surval's skiers and snowboarders, left bright and early for a weekend away in Verbier.

Upon arrival, the girls met their instructors - familiar faces from ESS Montreux - and boarded the cable car from Le Châble up to the slopes. After an action-packed morning, they stopped for lunch and refuelled ready for an afternoon of more lessons…and - to their excitement - snow! After a fun-filled afternoon incorporating slalom activities and 360 degree turns, the groups all skied down together, finishing the day a little wetter than they had started.

When it snows at the top of the mountain it tends to be raining at the bottom, but though their clothes may have been a bit wet, this did nothing to dampen their spirits.  After waving goodbye to their instructors for the day, they boarded the shuttle bus to their accommodation and checked into Les Elfes where they would be staying for the night.

A weekend in Verbier is always a big deal, but it’s an even bigger deal when one of our students turns sixteen.  After a full day on the slopes celebrating in the snow, she got to properly mark her special day with happy birthday sung by all the residents and a delicious cake organised by the staff at Les Elfes.

With their remaining energy, the girls then headed over to the ice rink and had a fun skating session to end the first part of their weekend away.

Understandably tired out, all girls were rather happy to see their beds and get some well-earned rest before another ski day. With sunnier skies above, our Sunday ski session was entirely different to the day before: fresh snow had fallen and bright sunshine shone over the resort.  Some girls had now changed to snowboards and began their beginner lessons; our advanced skier used her private session to make the most of race training and our intermediate boarders headed to the snow park to test their skills on jumps and boxes.

After lunch, we took the cable car up to Mont-Fort for the beautiful view over the valley and left our tracks on several more slopes.  After another full day, in total about ten hours skiing over the weekend, we skied down for the final time and headed back to Les Elfes where our Surval bus was waiting for us.

Only an hour away from Montreux, Verbier was the perfect weekend spot for our budding winter sportswomen and they thoroughly enjoyed the new setting and new skills learnt!
