Unlocking Global Confidence

Why Languages Matter

At Surval, we believe that mastering languages does more than open doors, it reshapes how students see the world. According to Ludwig Wittgenstein: “If we spoke a different language, we would perceive a somewhat different world.” This guides our vision as we equip students with the communication skills, cultural insight, and confidence needed to thrive globally.

A Living Multilingual Community

English is our primary language of instruction, while French is shared across the school, reflecting Surval’s roots as a Swiss finishing school. Students also have the option to study additional languages such as Spanish, Italian, German, Russian, or Japanese at conversational or formal levels.

Each student is encouraged to embrace linguistic growth at her own pace. All follow the DELF pathway in French, aligned with CEFR internationally recognised proficiency (A1–C2). This flexible framework lets girls take exams suited to their ability - not their age - and even short-stay students can work to gain a diploma.

Learning Beyond Lessons

Language learning at Surval isn’t confined to the classroom. Students engage in immersive French and English experiences:

  • French Language & Culture Programme: full-day French lessons paired with real-world practice, such as museum visits, local outings, and cultural activities.
  • Language in Action: from ordering meals during summer camp to conversing while exploring Montreux, students live the language daily.

In Their Own Words

Joanne, aged 15, described her journey in the French Language and Culture Programme:
"I decided to join… I knew only ‘Bonjour’ and now much more… We go on excursions… we go to museums… I get to practice my French… We learn in the garden… by the lake… You’re learning new things all while exploring Switzerland."

Sandra, a UK student, flourished into a trilingual communicator:
"I am now fluent in English, French and Spanish… and can ‘hold a conversation’ in Russian."

The Global-Ready Surval Student

Through language, students develop much more than grammar and vocabulary. They gain poise, cultural awareness, and authenticity, essential traits to walk into any setting with composure and presence. From DELF diplomas to real-life conversations and travel abroad, language is integral to the Surval experience. These are the keys to becoming confident, global citizens.
