A new headmistress for Surval Montreux

Posted on: 16th October 2012 | Category: Special events

Surval has been acquired by an English company, Bellevue Education Group, who are delighted to announce the appointment of the new headmistress, Mrs Penelope Penney. Mrs Penney brings a highly impressive professional background to the headship of Surval. She is a Freeman of the City of London, a  Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, a member of the Institute of Directors, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.  A former President and now Honorary Member of the Girls’ Schools Association, she has represented over 200 of the top girls’ schools in the UK by speaking about girls’ education in the media and at conferences in England, the United States, the Ukraine and Taiwan.

Mrs Penney has 25 years of experience as headmistress in top girls’ schools in the UK, including 14 years as headmistress of Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls, one of the most highly regarded girls’ schools and currently second in the league table of A Level results.  Mrs Penney is passionate about girls’ education and is looking forward to making Surval a leading school for girls who will be leaders in the future.

‘An exciting and innovative curriculum, inspiring teachers, an international mix of students and an outstanding location will make Surval the school of choice for girls who want to make their mark in the world’, says the new headmistress.

A small school of up to 85 students, aged from 13 to19, means that every girl is known personally and her particular interests and aspirations are catered for. From September 2013 the school will have a foundation year for girls of 13+, with a strong emphasis on language and a broad and challenging offer of subjects together with a wide ranging extracurricular and enrichment programme. The next 4 years will have three strands: the American High School Programme: the IGCSE and A Level: and a Liberal Arts programme which will incorporate a wide range of cultural and social issues, including elements of the current programmes. Students can choose a particular strand, or a combination of the three.  A strong pastoral core will be at the heart of the school, to support the individual, and a vibrant extracurricular and enrichment offer, from ice skating and skiing to Charity leadership and debating will underpin the academic side.  Poise and self confidence will continue to be hallmarks of Surval students.

‘We are conscious that many of our students will hold positions of considerable authority and importance in their own countries, and our curriculum and all round experience will equip them for a high level of social responsibility for the future’.

Mrs. Penney writes, ‘I am greatly looking forward to working with students, parents and staff to lead Surval into a new phase. I was educated only twenty minutes from Surval, at Châtelard School in Les Avants.  My memories of the opportunities for languages, for winter sports, for making friends across a wide range of nationalities were all valuable ones.  Above all, opening the windows each day on a spectacular and inspirational view of the mountains is the vision I hold for the young leaders of the future’.  Every day a new beginning...
