A Week in Dubai!

Posted on: 17th April 2015 | Category: Trips and excursions

At the end of last term, the Surval girls hung up their ski boots and dusted off their sandals, ready to swap snow for sand, and the Swiss Alps for a skyscraper skyline.  We were off to Dubai for a week!

The week was packed full of activities – both cultural and recreational.  Our first was a tour of the city.  For all the girls, it was their first time in the United Arab Emirates, so the stunning juxtaposition of serene beaches with jagged skyscrapers was unlike anything they had ever seen before.  There was ongoing construction everywhere - evidence of the country’s booming economy - and it was obvious that the people of the UAE took great pride in their country, doing nothing by half measures! The tour ended with a visit to the Burj Khalifa – the tallest building in the world – which pierces the sky, towering impressively above all the other buildings.  We took the lift (the fastest double-decker lift in the world at a speed of 10 metres/second!) to the 124th floor and observed the magnificent views around us, huge skyscrapers below looking like tiny boxes we could flick over with our little finger, cars so small they crawled along below us like ants.

The following day marked a particular highlight in the week, as we departed in the late afternoon for a desert safari.  In 4x4 Jeeps we squealed as we ‘dune-bashed’ our way around the desert, and marvelled as we watched the sun set into the sand.  We retreated to a luxurious desert campsite where we ate traditional Arabian food, rode camels, watched traditional Arabian dance and got Henna tattoos (don’t worry, they rub off!).  Everyone agreed it was a very special evening.

Another day, we journeyed to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.  Here we visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a pristine and very beautiful white building, simple and clean-cut on the outside, but very ornate on the inside.  We made sure to dress appropriately, donning headscarves for the occasion, and remembering to take off our shoes before entering the Mosque.  This was a fascinating way to learn more about the Islamic religion and culture.

Other highlights of the week included the visit to the Aquaventure Waterpark on Palm Island, and to the theme park Ferrari World where the girls got the ultimate adrenaline rush on the fastest rollercoaster in the world!  Of course, we also managed to squeeze in several visits to the Grand Mall of Dubai which was conveniently situated only minutes from our hotel.  Like all the architecture and construction we had seen in Dubai, the mall was on a massive and extravagant scale.  We could not possibly manage to visit all the shops in our few visits – an excuse for a return visit!

The girls agreed that the trip to Dubai ended the Winter Term on a fantastic note, an opportunity to carve yet more unforgettable Surval memories before dispersing for the holidays.  We are now back at school and term is in full swing.  However, whilst Dubai may be over, the coming months promise to offer even more wonderful new experiences for the girls to treasure forever.
