Cailler Chocolate Experience

Posted on: 25th September 2017 | Category: Boarding life, School Life, Trips and excursions

Whoever said they don’t like Mondays has clearly never had a Monday Surval style! The Cailler chocolate factory in Gruyere was the perfect way for twenty of us to spend a Bank Holiday Monday. With Ms Sexton’s jokes about “finding Charlie”, and the picturesque castle setting, it really was like we had walked into a novel by Roald Dahl. We strolled through the animated virtual tour of the factory, learning all about the history of chocolate. We watched the cogs of machinery turning, showing us the process of making chocolate all the way from the bean to the final chocolate products we know and love. And then came the best part: the tasting. We walked along a table covered in all the different “Cailler” chocolate delicacies, trying everything and pocketing some of our favourites. Our stomachs full of delicious chocolates, and our wallets empty from buying some for friends, we left the smell of cocoa behind and jumped back on the bus. We drove a little bit further on into the heart of Gruyere itself. The home of the celebrated cheese and a beautiful old castle, it is a place rich with history and heritage. The girls explored the different shops and restaurants, with many stopping for a rich Swiss fondue for lunch. Finally, we made our way back to school with big smiles and full stomachs, after a wonderful start to the week.
