CERN visit for Surval’s scientists!

Posted on: 15th May 2017

On the 4th May 2017, a number of girls expressed an interest to visit one of the world’s largest and most respected centres of scientific research: CERN. Founded in 1954 and situated 8km west of Geneva, its business is fundamental physics. The girls hoped to discover more about particle physics and were particularly interested in seeing the place where the World Wide Web (www) was developed and made available to the public, 28 years ago by a British scientist Tim Berners-Lee. It was originally created to allow information to be shared between scientists and universities around the world but after this public transmission, the girls cannot imagine life without this powerful tool. They saw the server that transmitted the first message over the internet as www – the message was ‘vague but exciting’.

The girls learned about the origins of the research into particle physics and how the original research was developed to create the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) which accelerates protons down a 27km tube resulting in multiple collisions and making new matter, enabling physicists to learn more about the Laws of Nature. We discussed the ATLAS experiment and visited the site where the LHC is installed. The LHC is designed to explore the biggest mysteries of our Universe. What happened after the Big Bang? How did our Universe evolve? Some of the many questions being investigated at CERN. We experienced an amazing 3D audio–visual tour which enabled us to appreciate the enormous scale of the enterprise and fully appreciate the magnitude of the task and achievement.

This visit surpassed our expectations and we look forward to visiting again in the future.
‘This place is amazing!' Jane, Grade 10

‘I am a non-scientist, but this has been so interesting and I am very glad to have visited CERN.’ Tina, Grade 12
