Desalpes Festival

Posted on: 13th October 2014 | Category: Swiss adventures

The annual Desalpes festival is one of the most popular mountain festivities in Switzerland. We joined in these celebrations with the Charmey community last weekend to welcome the cattle back to the plain after four months of grazing in alpine pastures.

The Swiss farmers take great pride in presenting their cattle with large bells around the necks and flower bouquets atop their heads. Every half hour we were treated to a new herd of cattle and the smiles of appreciation from the farming families dressed in traditional Swiss attire as they paraded their livestock through the streets.

In between the processions of cattle, there was a wide range of other Swiss specialties to keep us entertained. The side streets contained a huge variety of local produce ranging from cheeses to meats to home baked goods. The work of local craftsmen and women was impressive and had a definite Swiss flair. Musically we were treated to the Alpine horn, flag throwers, country orchestras and brass bands.

The Desalpes festival was a fantastic way for all of us to experience one of the most culturally significant events in the Swiss calendar and it was certainly something we had never experienced before!
