Fashion weekend at Surval

Posted on: 1st April 2014 | Category: Boarding life, Music, theater and art, Special events

Last weekend Surval welcomed lingerie designer Natalie O’Neill for a closed fashion weekend. Natalie spoke openly about the less than glamorous side of fashion design including the importance of accounting and the difficulties of being one’s own boss. She emphasised to the girls how invaluable the business subjects she undertook in school have proved to be. Natalie then spoke about trend prediction in fashion and how designers look to global events and all forms of media for inspiration.

The girls were split into small teams and were given a task to design an outfit from found or second – hand materials incorporating trend prediction and a variety of design techniques.

The girls worked consistently throughout the weekend to produce a fashion show on the Sunday night where everyone involved was incredibly impressed. One model from each of the teams walked down the runway to a large applause from staff and students.

Below are some reflections from the girls:

“The weekend was very special for me and my friends. It took four hours to create my dress. We felt really tired at the end but when we saw our achievement in front of us, we thought everything was worth it!”

Cynthia (China)

“I had a great time working with my friends on the skirt we made for the fashion show and I really enjoyed discovering the creative sides of my fellow students. It was a great way to spend our last weekend of the term together.”

Gloria (South Africa)
