Feast of St Nicholas 2013

Posted on: 10th December 2013 | Category: Boarding life, Special events

Surely a scene of splendour from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby? No. It was a fantastic evening of the Feast of St Nicholas at Surval, complete with décor and a  glowing Christmas tree opposite the beautiful vista of the lake and Montreux in full blaze of luminescence under the starry December sky.

‘Lights, lights’ was virtually the theme, everything and everyone at Surval made radiant by the night. It was joyous to see the girls in their stunning evening dresses and hair-dos.  ‘They look so wonderfully elegant,’ commented Anne-Marie, and cameras and IPhones clicked girls individually or in groups to record the event. ‘It is always exciting to discover other traditions,’ reflected Farida.

The Reception for seventy girls, guests, and staff began with non-alcoholic cocktails prepared by the Liberal Arts group, with a special mention for Lucia, Selenne, and Daniela for their Tobasco-and-Salsa-inspired efforts in creating and serving the delicious drinks, much enjoyed all-around, as evinced by the repeat orders. We were putting into practice what had been rehearsed a week before in Ms Musgrave’s Specialist Workshop. The cocktails and canapés made the Art Room into a banquet in itself, and the school and our visitors had to be persuaded to leave so that the dinner might commence.

And resplendent was the Dining Room! Long candlelit tables sumptuous with M. Baumann’s culinary creations in readiness for a lovely meal to celebrate Christmas and mark the near-end of an extraordinary and successful Autumn Term. ‘For me this is something really interesting and different,’ said Masha; ‘A brand-new experience,’ added Angelina. ‘A chance to mingle and talk to all the Staff,’ reflected Andrea. How the conversation flowed, laughter echoed, and Mrs Penney toasted our guests.

‘Happy’ is the word that best describes this superb evening, which was memorable not only for this Yuletide, but as something for the girls to cherish forever.
