Happy New Year!

The Year of the Monkey.

All over the world millions of people celebrated the Chinese New Year Festivities and here at Surval, we did also. Sunday was the Eve of Chinese New Year and we began to decorate the dinning room with traditional Chinese symbols and lanterns which the students had made.

Monday morning the school received a little insight into the Chinese celebrations from the students of Chinese origin. Xin Yi, Crystal, Alisa and Linda took over assembly to describe the History of the event, the traditions, and events which take place to celebrate the New Year. Later that evening the students enjoyed festive games involving sweets, chopsticks and dragons! Following Chinese traditions, the festivities last 14 days, therefore we continued to celebrate on Tuesday. In each lesson the Chinese students had prepared lesson starters based around Chinese culture. For example, the students learned how to count to 10 in Maths, learnt about Chinese Etiquette and learnt how to say My name is... in Chinese, just to name a few.

The celebrations then ended that evening with a traditional Chinese meal; soup, dumplings, fried rice, sweet and sour chicken and deep fried fruit with ice cream for dessert.
