Graduation 2016

Posted on: 26th June 2016

The end of an era

On the sunniest day this year, Graduation and Prize Giving at Surval was off to a great start. Girls have been deciding on their dress for the occasion for many weeks, and manicurists and hairdressers in town were being kept busy. The results were stunning, as our photographs show! The end of year is a great event in any school, but especially so in a fully boarding school where all students are from different countries and their parents have relatively few chances to see the school, meet teachers and enjoy seeing in person their daughter’s friends and parents.

Happily almost all parents were able to join us to celebrate the extremely successful year and to congratulate their own daughters, and others, on so much achievement. Our CEO Mr Malley was Guest of Honour to distribute the prizes, and of course the high spot of the day was the presentation of this year’s graduands, and the traditional ceremony that goes with this. Graduands wore their gowns and mortar boards, marched up to the dais to the traditional music of Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance, turned the tassels from one side to the other to denote Graduate status-and finally threw their caps in the air to thunderous applause. A moving moment!

The speeches from Mrs Penney and Mr Malley reflected on Surval’s notable achievement in the Review by the AdvancEd Accreditation ream who visited in October and were so quick to understand this unique school and what it does for each student. There are so many individual stories of growth and success in personal and academic achievements and many parents came up to express their own appreciation of what Surval has done for their daughters. Girls spoke of Surval as a home and a family, and our Student of the Year, Fernanda Name, made a moving speech about what she had enjoyed and learned, and above all, the friends for life she had made over the year. After the formal ceremony we moved to a ‘cocktail dînatoire’, where parents, staff and girls took their drinks into the garden, moved to the barbecue and buffet, and finally came indoors to shelter from the hot sun to enjoy more food in the cool dining room which had been so beautifully prepared. One cannot imagine a better way to end what Mrs Penney described as ‘the best year ever for Surval’.
