Ski Week 2016 - La Plagne

Posted on: 11th February 2016 | Category: Sport, Trips and excursions, Winter Camp

The sense of fizzing anticipation on the bus journey from Switzerland reached its peak as we arrived at our scenic ski in / ski out Alpine hotel amidst the picturesque snow clad mountains of La Plagne. After several weeks of Ski Thursday, both staff and students were keen to further improve their snow-sliding skills, be it forwards or sideways, on the sunny slopes of France. Alas, however, dawn of the following morning greeted us rather grumpily in a very soggy fashion, with rain and sleet and lowering cloud. Nothing daunted, the girls (and teachers!) began their lessons with new instructors and returned that evening soaked, but still buzzing with excitement and eager for more.

As the week continued, the girls exceeded all expectations in both their progress on the mountain and their infectious sense of fun and enjoyment. Whether venturing down their first red run, shoop-shooping the ski slalom, or even riding a half-pipe for the first time, they gave it their all. And, when not working on their ski or snowboard skills, there was still further scope for fun on the hill – this time sliding sitting down (and not always forwards facing either!). The wildly popular Snake Gliss involved all the girls whizzing ‘comme un serpent’ down the run on a chain of linked sledges, frequently tumbling off to much hilarity. The elegantly described ‘bum boarding’ involved even more falling off and rolling down the hill! Some students also made the discovery that the bumboards were very effective snow-throwing devices…

After a white-out day on the penultimate Thursday, Friday treated us to the best possible final day gift: a true powder day. A golden sun in cloudless blue sky turned the fresh snow into a shimmering spray of diamonds as we carved new tracks into the gleaming white. The high point of our magical last morning was topped off with lunch of pizza and crepes at a mountain view restaurant – and ear-to-ear smiles all round.

Our unforgettable week of winter sport fun was rounded off with a presentation of certificates from the instructors who had played such a part in ensuring it was a week of achievement and progress; and then it was sadly time to board the bus for home. A stop off at the charming French town of Annecy provided a fun opportunity for French food, a ‘flâneur’ around the town and some final photo ops. We journeyed back to Surval, tired but happy, and already looking forward to showing off our Ski Week skills at the very next Ski Thursday!
