Ski Week

Posted on: 14th February 2015 | Category: Sport, Winter Camp

On Saturday 31st January, Surval set off for a week’s skiing and snowboarding in the French Alps.

On our arrival in our resort - La Plagne - we were met with a flurry of snow. This meant that we were lucky enough to start the week with perfect powder on the slopes. This luck was to continue - throughout the week we would be graced with sunny skies and plenty of fresh snow!

Quickly the girls settled into a routine on the slopes: two hours of skiing or snowboarding in the morning, and a further two hours after a hearty French lunch. (Over the course of the week, the girls experienced many dishes typical of French cuisine, including raclette au jambon, gratin de fruits de mers and cuisse de lapin avec de la semoule.) The instructors were all native French speakers and the girls did not hesitate to make the most of this fantastic opportunity to practise their French. The last day of skiing was particularly special: the girls took a packed lunch and embarked on a whole day of skiing in order to venture further afield and discover even more of the 200 slopes of this extensive resort! Some girls stopped for a chocolat viennois with their instructor and some were even kind enough to surprise their instructor with a gift on the last day. All of the instructors agreed that the girls had been a delight to spend the week with and were sad to see them go.

Despite such active days, the girls found the energy to participate enthusiastically in the many activities organised each evening. There was heated competition on Quiz Night (not least between the two teacher teams!) and the girls put their French comprehension to the test by watching a French theatre show. Perhaps one of the girls’ favourite evening activities was the ‘Snake-Glisse,’ which involved weaving down the slopes on sledges connected in a serpent-like line. Karaoke night was also popular and everyone joined in in good spirits. Some girls astounded a captive audience by unveiling beautiful singing voices, proof that the Surval girls have endless hidden talents. It was lovely to learn more about each other in a different context: new memories were made, and new friendships forged.

On Saturday 7th February, after a week of fantastic fun and French, the girls journeyed back to Montreux, stopping off for lunch in the picturesque French town of Annecy. They have already settled back into lessons but - never fear - skiing is not over! The girls will continue to enjoy Ski Thursdays every week and we are confident that our ski instructors here in Switzerland will be impressed at the progress of all the girls.
