Liberal Arts charity trip to Romania

Posted on: 5th April 2014 | Category: Commitment to communities

A key feature of the Liberal Arts programme is charity work. After so long looking forward to this, at last  Liberal Arts students engaged in ten days volunteering  in Romania, helping in a school to teach English. As they left Surval, they were students, not sure what to expect or what they would be facing. After a long 10 days of lesson planning, assisting in teaching and then finally becoming the sole teacher of a class, they returned to Surval as teachers, along with a better understanding of the work that goes along with it.

One student writes:

‘Romania has been one of the most eye-opening experiences I've ever had. Having to teach English to children is a lot harder than it seems. I've learned the importance of being responsible. Also, teaching in Romania has really made me realize that being a teacher is really hard and tiring. As students, we don't notice all the time and effort teachers put into their planning. I can definitely say that after Romania, I have more respect towards teachers. This experience has been unforgettable.’
