Surval trip to Stuttgart

On Friday morning, Surval students departed for the Christmas trip to Stuttgart. Half way there, we stopped to visit one of the biggest and best known Zoos in Europa: Basel Zoo. The students were able to see many new born baby animals, from giraffe to kangaroo and the adorable young chimpanzees. There was time for a little souvenir shopping and then we were on our way to Stuttgart to experience the Weinachtsmarkt. A spectacular buffet was had at the Le Meridian hotel in Stuttgart: every possible food was on offer from fantastic fois gras, through several meat and fish dishes and naturally the ever popular chocolate fondue fountain. A great way to finish the first day.

On Saturday morning our knowledgeable guide gave us some fascinating insights into this interesting region. We learned about the people who shaped the city, and interpreted the rich symbolism of the buildings. Then onto the Mercedes-Benz museum where the exhibition tells this amazing story in the context of the social, economic and political history of Europe and the world. From the earliest racing cars, vehicles for leisure, emergency and military use, an actual ‘Pope-mobile’ and one of the M-class cars used in the movie Jurassic Park. A welcome pit stop in the museum’s excellent restaurant refuelled us to continue our tour of this architecturally stunning building.

After a busy morning students were given some free time. Shopping was high on most of the Surval students’ list of things to do, and there were plenty of opportunities. The traditional indoor Stuttgart Markthalle, packed with local delicacies, the famous and atmospheric Stuttgart Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market) and the fascinating Esslingen Medieval Market with demonstrations of artisan skills, all provided bags of goodies to take home.

On Sunday morning the level of excitement reached fever pitch as we left Stuttgart for a day at Europa Park. Everyone packed up and checked out of the hotel in record time, anxious not to lose a minute on the rides. There were seasonal food specialities to try, souvenirs to buy and terrifyingly exciting rides for the thrill-seekers.

Then back to school (and wi-fi) in the evening to share photos and news of the trip with friends and family around the world!
