Surval trip to Vienna

Posted on: 3rd December 2013 | Category: Trips and excursions

On the day that saw the first snow of the winter fall at Surval, 21 girls and 4 staff headed off to Vienna for a long weekend.

We arrived in a cold Vienna on Thursday evening, just in time for the girls to have their first wander around the spectacular Christmas Market outside Vienna’s Town Hall with its trees full of huge lanterns in the shape of snowmen, Santa Claus and stars, dozens of stalls selling all sorts of Christmassy gifts and a bombardment of different tasty smells from the great variety food on offer.

A very cold day one included a walk around the beautiful grandeur of Vienna’s first district, ending at the stunning St. Stephens Cathedral where we gained further insights into the history of this celebrated city. The afternoon was spent at Schonbrunn where we were dazzled by the finery of this plush summer palace. Friday’s meals were a real highlight- lunch was had at one of the oldest inns in Vienna, The Grieschenbeisl and dinner at Heurige Wolff in Grinzing where the girls were plied with plates of traditional meats, vegetables and sauerkraut and entertained by musicians playing various well-known tunes on the accordion and violin- two of the teachers even partook in some humiliating dancing to the Birdy Song!

Saturday was a more art-focused day as we continued our tour of Vienna ending at the Hundertwasser House and Art Gallery. The vivid mixture of colours and shapes was of great contrast to the order and uniformity seen in the grand buildings across the rest of the city. From here, the girls spent the afternoon exploring the great variety of shops, restaurants and Christmas markets on offer while the staff indulged in a slice of Sachertorte at the famous Sacher Hotel as well as the impressive assortment of art on display in the various galleries across the city.

Our final morning in Wien was spent at the famous Spanish Riding School where we were thoroughly impressed by the poise, control and agility of the beautiful white stallions in the surreal surroundings of the historic arena. After a final, traditional lunch of Schnitzel in the Rathauskeller it was time to depart this beautiful city to return to Surval on Sunday evening. Fortunately, this week sees the opening of the vast Christmas Market in Montreux, so it will be easy to continue the Christmas spirit sparked by the lights and sights of Vienna…
