Surval visit the Balloon Festival in Chateau d’Oex

Posted on: 3rd February 2017

We had an amazing day in Château d’Oex last Saturday!

The weather was fantastic and ideal for the International Balloon Festival, that is held there every year in January.

Château d’Oex is a lovely village situated in the beautiful Pays d’En-Haut, about 40 minutes away from Montreux. So the bus drove us through the Col des Mosses where the ski resort looked very busy that morning, with lots of people very excited about enjoying this sunny day on the slopes. The panorama was breath-taking when we arrived above the village of Château d’Oex: some of the huge balloons were just taking off. The sky was so blue, the mountains so white, and the balloons so colourful!

The bus dropped our group next to the large snowy field where the opening ceremony was going to take place, and we could observe how the balloons were getting ready to take off. Very impressive!

We decided to walk further and higher to the hill where the church is to capture the most stunning view. We enjoyed watching the balloons, having our lunch in the snow and breathing the healthy pure air. It was -2° C, but we did not feel the cold, as the sun had been shining all day long. We made some angels in the snow, jumped to catch the balloons above our heads and some of us even tried to hide in the fresh snow!

Later we had a walk through the village of Château d’Oex and saw the wonderful chalets. Some of them are very old and well restored. We enjoyed a welcome  hot chocolate in the charming tea-room on the top of the village, before visiting the wooden church on the hill to admire its famous red organ. Coming down again, we really had fun rolling and running down the hill in the deep fresh snow!

Finally, the bus took us to the next village called Rossinière, where we had a booked session of cutting the paper. We had a fantastic initiation of a this swiss craftwork tradition, and we all enjoyed the creative and peaceful moment together.

We came back to Surval through Bulle, Gruyères and Châtel-St-Denis, happy and exhausted!

This was indeed a wonderful and perfect day!
