The Carnival of Venice celebrated at Surval

Posted on: 14th March 2014 | Category: Boarding life, Special events

The Carnival of Venice or In Italian “Carnevale di Venezia” is an annual festival held in Venice, Italy. The Carnival ends with the Christian celebration of Lent, forty days before Easter on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. The festival is iconic for its elaborate masks.

It is believed that the Carnival of Venice was started from a victory of the "Serenissima Repubblica" in the year 1162, against Ulrico Di Treven, the “Patriarch of Aquileia”. The people started to dance and make reunions in San Marco Square in honour of this victory.

On Thursday the 6th of March we had a Carnival of Venice dinner at Surval.  It was a magical evening filled with creative fun masks that the girls made during their art course. Madame Nathalie and the kitchen staff made an amazing job with the beautiful decorations of the room. Throughout our meal we were able to enjoy music of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons”, and it really gave the room a whole different atmosphere and feel to it. It made the whole evening feel sophisticated and special. The meal was delicious, Chef Baumann and his staff did a stellar job. I think I can speak for everybody who attended when i say we all had a great time.
