Winter Camp in Andermatt 2014

Posted on: 31st January 2014

Surval has a tradition of Winter Camp, with the whole school, together with up to a dozen new girls, moving up to the small mountain village of Andermatt. Each day of the girls' two week schedule in Andermatt was packed with learning and lots of fun. Our students spent every morning in either French or English language classes with one of the Surval teachers and each afternoon on the wide, snowy slopes around Andermatt. We were very lucky with the quality of snow, having a fresh six inches during the middle of our stay; most of the other days we basked in clear blue skies and sunshine.

The girls also enjoyed some silly fun and games on a couple of evenings with the Teachers' and the Ski Instructors' Rallies. The Teachers' event saw the girls completing various team-based practical tasks around the village, such as seeing who could build the tallest structure from marshmallows and spaghetti and racing with an orange held between their heads. The Ski instructors' evening took the girls to the local ice rink where they competed in some rather more slippery events!

On Sunday we took a day trip to the beautiful nearby town of Lugano and did a bit of shopping in the extensive shopping mall. This, together with ice skating and an evening journey up the mountain side for a traditional meal of Raclette as well as exploring the quaint village of Andermatt, kept the girls busy!  On Wednesday evening the girls, teachers and instructors all took the train up the mountain with 42 sledges in tow, ready to speed down the slopes by the light of the dying day and full moon. It was a beautiful, if cold, evening and there were some aching faces at the end of it from so much laughing and squealing!

On the final day on the slopes, the girls competed against each other in a slalom race and showed off the skills they had been learning throughout the Camp. It was especially impressive to see the vast progress made by those girls who had joined Winter Camp as complete beginners. That evening, the girls were rewarded for their efforts in the Awards Night, complete with podiums. It was a great, celebratory end to the trip.

The girls all returned, exhausted, to Montreux on Friday afternoon ready for the January school term to commence!

‘Andermatt was great! We all had the opportunity to meet new friends, and speaking for the new students, we had an amazing welcoming. I really enjoyed it, and I'm sure everyone did.’ Daniela, Mexico

‘I had a great pleasure to stay in Andermatt for those 2 weeks. Andermatt is a wonderful small town with amazing views. Me and my friends had a good time together in Andermatt and we hope to visit it again.’ Farida, Russia
