Beijing is visited by Surval students

Posted on: 30th April 2014 | Category: Trips and excursions

Surval’s Easter holiday trip to Beijing caught the city in the height of spring: the trees were laden with blossoms and the city’s parks and gardens were lush and green.

The Surval girls saw all of Beijing’s historical splendour: The Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, The Summer Palace and Jingshan Park.  And of course no visit to Beijing would have been complete without taking a visit to see the Pandas of Beijing Zoo!   We had to quickly get used to the Chinese tourists being more interested in taking photos of our girls than the historical scenery around them!

Wednesday’s trip to the see the Great Wall was a highlight; many of the girls managed to climb almost all the way to the top of the section of the wall that was maintained and open to the public. This was a tough, constant climb for over an hour but it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for many. The views over the surrounding hills were wonderful as you could trace the wall along the landscape for miles and miles.

We had several interesting cultural visits too, including one to a silk factory where we learnt how silk was extracted from worms and spun to create a variety of products from cloth to pillows and duvets. The girls also visited a tea house where they learned about and tasted a wide variety of teas poured from all sorts of tea pots.  Following this, tea became a very popular purchase for the girls to take home! Two evenings were spent at the theatre where we were entertained by an eye-watering spectacle of acrobatic stunts and a Kung-Fu extravaganza.

And of course, we have to mention the visit to one of the city’s traditional food markets where fried scorpions, sea-horses and tarantulas were on sale and three of our boldest, bravest girls decided to give the scorpions a taste!

‘Visiting China was an amazing new experience for me, I found it very amusing how our culture (Surval) clashed with their culture leading to thorough interest in the differences we have’
