Surval students experiment with dry ice

Recently Grade 9 students have been investigating some of the fundamental principles that underpin Chemistry using various chemicals such as Iodine and Dry Ice. 


Students used Dry Ice (solid carbon dioxide) to demonstrate the process of sublimation where solids turn directly into gases without passing through the liquid phase. This also involved other important chemical principles such as pH changes (acids and bases), density of gases (using washing up liquid to create bubbles of carbon dioxide which sink instead of float) and rate of reaction by comparing the effects of adding cold water and hot water to the sublimation process.
