An Eventful Term at Surval Montreux

Posted on: 10th December 2012 | Category: Principal's Blog

As we enter December, girls are enjoying our end of term festivities and looking back on the experiences of the past three months. So much has happened in this half term: the Art History trip to Rome, on the wettest and coldest week of the year-yet, with enthusiasm undimmed, girls worked on their sketch books, explored some of the most exciting and interesting cultural landmarks in the world, developed greater appreciation of painting and architecture, and then spent the evening enjoying traditional Italian food (which they discovered was not all pasta and pizza!).  The next weekend visit was to Zurich and the Christmas Market, and these residential trips were interspersed by opportunities to visit the ballet, films varying from SkyFall to Anna Karenina, the circus, art galleries and the famous Alimentarium (food museum) at Vevey.  Photos and comments about these are found elsewhere on the website.

To encourage girls to think about future careers, we hosted three day time presentations from our local Higher Education providers: the Business School of Lausanne, the Ecole Hotelière de Lausanne and the European University.  These were a great success and enabled girls on all the different programmes to look at possibilities they might not have considered.  Partly with the increasing interest in running businesses, we have introduced a challenging and inspiring new course for summer school: Young Business Leaders. This is aimed at ambitious girls from ages of 16-20, who really want to make a mark in the world. Details of this are on the website, and you will see that we have a new range of courses for all our summer schools this year. For each of the three week courses, lasting 9 weeks in all from June 16 to August 16, we offer three separate options.  Following these courses we will start the 3 week Young Business Leaders, and also the 2 week intensive English course for girls joining us at Surval in September. Summer will certainly be busy here, and we look forward to having many girls who will then come back to join one of our major programmes of IGCSE, A Level, American High School or Liberal Arts.

But summer is a long way off. We are now in the Christmas season, with deep snow to prove it!  On Friday, we celebrated the Festival of St Nicholas.  Girls enjoyed a great chance to wear their most formal dresses (some serious shopping was undertaken in advance, and hairdressers throughout Montreux were kept busy all day!).  We invited students from Gstaad International School to join us, and they braved heavy snow to come down by train from their alpine chalet. The food was delicious, with Fondue à la chinoise as the highlight of the meal. Afterwards the girls had a superb disco and karaoke evening and danced and sang until around 2am. A great time was had by everyone, and it is an event we shall enjoy repeating in future.

At the start of next term, while the girls are in Andermatt for their three weeks of skiing, I shall be travelling to Mexico to tell people about our new courses for next year, and to encourage them to come and enjoy the wonderful Surval experience. Dates are yet to be fixed, but we expect to be in Monterrey from 19-23 January and then in Mexico City from 24-25 January. I do hope you will encourage friends and family to meet me there.

From all of us at a snowy Surval, we wish you a very Happy Christmas!
