“I have always had a desire to help people in need around the world”

Graciela, Mexico/Croatia (FY) reflects on her experience of charity work at Cartons du Coeur - boxes from the heart - on November 3rd in Montreux

This Saturday, I was given the unforgettable opportunity to participate in a magnificent Swiss charity association - Cartons du Coeur - for which people volunteer once a year to collect an enormous amount of hygiene products, household essentials and food to deliver to the people lacking means in the Riviera of Vevey and Montreux. This collection of products takes place in supermarkets, in which the volunteers can share information to the customers with the purpose of inspiring them to buy certain products to donate to the charity. Together with the friends that I worked alongside with throughout the day - Maria, Madawi, Zoe, Lupita and Lizeth - I can now proudly call myself a volunteer who raised 15027 tonnes of goods in 846 boxes.

Not only was I doing rewarding work, but I also got the chance to interact with the other charity workers and share my feelings about how important is for young teenagers like myself and my friends to be a part of this Cartons du Coeur - boxes from the heart - charity. I was able to practise my French with the locals, getting more confident about approaching people as the day went on; I was struggling at first to speak to people, but as the time passed, it got so much easier.

I’ve always had a desire to help people in need around the world. Here at Surval I am able to embrace that part of myself. I am extremely grateful to, at such a young age, have been given this possibility of helping others, as the values that come with the experience will enrich my life - and, I hope, the lives of others - in so many ways. Charity work fills us with kindness and satisfaction due to the fact that we are participating in improving somebody’s life. I simply can’t explain the amazing feeling it inspires.

Being part of Cartons du Coeur was a remarkable experience in my life. I was so lucky to be accompanied by such a wonderful group of people, and to be guided by teachers that I look up to - Ms. Drake and Madame Spigarelli. I can’t wait to participate in more charity work throughout the year that I know I will never forget!
