A Journey of Culture and Connection: Surval South Korea Tour

30 April 2025

What an honour it was to have one of our very own Survaliennes, Amalia Lopez (Mexico, 1996), join us on our recent cultural tour of South Korea. Her presence brought a unique depth to the experience—bridging past and present, and embodying the spirit of global curiosity that defines Surval. With thoughtful reflection and a keen eye for connection, Amalaia beautifully captures the heart of our journey through her words. From sacred temples to the vibrant streets of Seoul, her perspective reminds us how travel can shape not only how we see the world, but how we see ourselves within it.

Discovering Korea: A Cultural Journey with Surval Montreux

Travel is always an education, but some journeys open your mind in ways you never expect.
Our recent school trip to South Korea was one of those transformative experiences. Over two unforgettable weeks, we explored three remarkable cities—Incheon, Busan, and Seoul—each offering a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Along the way, we gained a deeper appreciation for Korean culture and how it differs from our own.

A Glimpse into a New World

From the moment we landed in Incheon, we felt we were entering a society deeply rooted in history, yet full of innovation and energy. We began with a tour of the coastal city, taking in the peaceful beauty of Wolmido Island and enjoying a scenic sea train ride—our first glimpse into Korea’s connection to both land and sea. We kicked off our adventure with a fun bike ride, filled with culture and unforgettable laughter.

The next day, we traveled south to Busan, where stunning contrasts awaited us. The ocean views at Cheongsapo and Haeundae Blue were breathtaking, and we explored both the coastline and the mountains—riding a cable car that offered jaw-dropping views of the natural landscape. With the waves crashing below and incense drifting from nearby temples, I felt truly connected to something timeless.

Later, we visited the serene Bulguksa and Gamsansa Temples, where the spiritual atmosphere invited reflection. Sharing a traditional temple meal, participating in a tea ceremony, and making bracelets with a monk were moments of calm and connection I’ll never forget.

Culture Through Connection

One of the most enriching parts of the trip was discovering the differences between Korean and Western social customs. Small details made a big impact: bowing as a sign of respect, removing shoes before entering homes and temples, and the emphasis on hierarchy and etiquette in interactions.

Korean culture places a strong value on respect—especially toward elders and teachers—a principle that made us reflect on our own everyday habits.

In Seoul, we immersed ourselves in both the grandeur of the past and the excitement of modern life. Highlights included visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace and witnessing the colorful changing of the royal guards, as well as walking through the charming streets of Bukchon Hanok Village. A particularly profound moment was our visit to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). Standing just meters away from North Korea was surreal. Our guide’s stories brought to life the complex history of this fascinating site. It was a reminder that travel teaches us not just about places, but about the resilience, struggles, and strength of people.

Shared Perspectives

One of the most memorable parts of the trip was visiting a South Korean international school. We met with students and teachers, sharing our experiences of life in Switzerland while learning about their perspectives on growing up in Korea. These open conversations sparked genuine curiosity and showed us just how much we can learn from one another—teenagers from opposite sides of the world, brought together by a shared desire to connect.

Culture, Fun, and Pop Moments

Of course, no trip to Korea would be complete without diving into its pop culture and entertainment scene! From the lively atmosphere of a baseball game to an exciting behind-the-scenes tour of the MSK K-Drama Studio, we experienced firsthand why Korean pop culture has taken the world by storm.

We also spent time simply walking the streets, tasting new foods, laughing with friends, and enjoying the energy of a country where tradition and trend blend seamlessly.

Reflections

This journey was about stretching our global perspective, embracing difference, and finding connection in unexpected places. South Korea welcomed us with open arms—and in return, we leave with more than just photos or souvenirs. We return home with new friendships, lasting memories, and a renewed sense of what it means to be a global citizen.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that culture isn’t just something you observe—it’s something you feel, live, and carry with you long after the journey ends.
