Faces of Surval: Meet Sarah

30 April 2025

Sarah has been a valued member of the Surval team for over a year, travelling far and wide to meet with families and share the spirit of Surval around the world. Recently, she took on a personal challenge and completed the London Marathon — a journey of dedication, resilience, and heart. Here’s a glimpse into her inspiring story.

My London Marathon journey began last year as a spectator, cheering on my husband and feeling so inspired by the atmosphere and the incredible stories of the runners that I decided to take on the challenge myself. At 49, and not particularly fit, I applied for a charity place with Pancreatic Cancer—a cause close to my heart after losing my mother to the disease three years ago. I was thrilled to be offered a place and began training: new shoes, gym sessions, and a gradual running plan. I managed to reach the distance of 12 miles running in January and was on plan to reach the end goal, however sadly persistent knee issues just couldn’t be fixed, and the physio commended I switch from running to power walking. I was devastated, but despite the setback, I continued training, —clocking up sessions in gyms while working in far flung places such as Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Dubai!

On race day, nerves were high, but with £2,500 already raised, I was determined. The atmosphere was electric, with Gospel choirs, jazz bands, cheering crowds, and endless community spirit lining the streets. The heat was tough, and the miles between 14 and 20 felt endless, but I pushed on, encouraged by supporters along the way. I had my husband, daughters and friends on the side lines cheering me on. Crossing the finish line on The Mall after 6 hours and 43 minutes was an emotional moment, made even more special by raising a final total of £3,571. Every step taken was firstly in memory of my mother, who I know was with me in spirit all the way around, and secondly in support of Pancreatic Cancer who are working so incredibly hard to help doctors with earlier diagnosis which will result in earlier treatments and ultimately better outcomes for those facing pancreatic cancer.
