Model United Nations at Surval: Teacher's Blog

22 December 2021

This Autumn Term has been an exciting time at Surval for our Model United Nations extra-curricular club. The Surval MUN club members are passionate about international relations, climate change and sustainability.

The eight students that form Surval's Model United Nations club meet weekly to examine different international issues, either discussing current international events and working in committees to debate current global issues. This trimester the girls focused on a recent incident involving the forcing down of an airplane in Belarus in order to arrest an opposition journalist that had been critical of the Belarusian government’s leadership. The group also discussed diplomatic proposals to the current situation between Russia and Europe.

The Surval MUN club members have also begun preparing for the Youth Forum Switzerland at the International School of Zug and Luzern in January 2022. The Youth Forum was created in 2017 by a group of globally engaged students from ISZL who had attended the World Economic Forum in Davos and were inspired to organize an event which would give young people in Switzerland a voice in global issues.

Our club members will have a chance to attend, participate in forum discussions, listen to a series of Ted-talk style presentations from guest policy analysts as well as from presenting student groups, and to network with hundreds of globally-minded students from scores of international schools across Europe.

The MUN students from Surval will be focusing on issues surrounding grassroots climate change and sustainability activism. They have been very focused on preparing a dossier of information relevant to their topic and hope to have an opportunity to deliver a presentation at the forum itself.

Take a look at Surval's Model United Nations Grade 12 students presentation on sustainability and climate change. Our motivated students delivered a great presentation during school assembly, linked to the the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow.
